Voice Matters - Patricia Rickard-Clarke
This podcast features a recording of Patricia Rickard-Clarke’s keynote address at the launch event for Voice Matters, a two-year review detailing Sage Advocacy’s experience with the implementation of the Assisted Decision-Making (Capacity) Acts.
Patricia Rickard-Clarke is a former Commissioner of the Law Reform Commission; a Trustee of Sage Advocacy; and Chair of Safeguarding Ireland. She has been instrumental in transforming the legal landscape in Ireland in relation to decision-making capacity, working for many years to move things away from the archaic and deeply damaging regime of the Lunacy Act 1871, which lingered on our statute books until the advent of the Assisted Decision-Making Act 2015.
On May 7, Sage Advocacy marked the launch of Voice Matters with an event at Wood Quay Venue, Dublin, opened by the law’s great champion, Patricia Rickard-Clarke. Ms Rickard-Clarke provided a powerful account of the journey of the formation of the Act, from 2006 to present, placed in parallel with the development of Sage and its achievements along the same journey. Ms Rickard Clarke’s address illuminated the breadth and depth of the contribution that Sage has offered to this radical shift in human rights law in Ireland – where the lurking 1871 Lunacy Act has been put to bed once and for all!
